Belinda Balluku faces extended SPAK investigation into corruption
Former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku appeared before the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure (SPAK) on Tuesday. Prosecutors announced that the investigation into her alleged criminal activities has been extended until January 2027.
Balluku is under investigation for several offenses, including violations of equality in public tenders, passive corruption of high-ranking officials, and money laundering. The probe focuses on at least eight cases, including procurement procedures for the Llogara Tunnel and various lots of the Tirana Great Ring Road. Investigators are also examining her tenure at the company Albcontrol.
Following her appearance at the prosecutor's office, Balluku posted a social media update featuring Prime Minister Edi Rama. The post highlighted a promise to increase police salaries by 2,500 euros starting in January. This post drew significant public backlash, with commenters accusing her of attempting to incite violence against student protesters and criticizing the use of public funds.
