Belize and Honduras discuss expanding trade and regional cooperation

Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño met with Honduran President Nasry Asfura in Tegucigalpa to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and regional cooperation. The discussions focused on several key areas, including trade, security, health, climate change, and regional integration.

Briceño proposed the possibility of a formal trade agreement between Belize and Honduras, noting that Belize is actively expanding its economic ties within Central America following arrangements with Guatemala and El Salvador. The leaders also addressed the need for enhanced security cooperation and information sharing to combat transnational threats such as drug trafficking.

Additionally, the meeting covered regional air connectivity and Belize’s role as the Pro Tempore President of the Central American Integration System (SICA) for the second half of 2026. The leaders emphasized improving the movement of goods and people between Central America and the Caribbean while maintaining Belize’s unique Caribbean identity.
