Belize government moves forward with constitutional reform proposals

Prime Minister John Briceño has formally presented the People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) report to the House of Representatives in Belize. While the PCC originally submitted 167 recommendations for changes to the nation’s system of government, an eight-month review by external constitutional experts has narrowed these down to 53 proposals identified as constitutional matters.

The review process, which included human rights attorney Edward Fitzgerald KC, categorized recommendations based on eight criteria, including governance, fundamental rights, durability, and legitimacy. Proposals were sorted into those requiring constitutional changes, those manageable through standard legislation, and those deemed unnecessary or requiring further discussion.

The government plans to launch a public awareness campaign lasting approximately six to eight months to educate citizens on these recommendations before any potential referendum is held. Prime Minister Briceño stated that the consultation process is intended to allow the public to analyze the government’s rationale and provide further feedback.
