Belize leads regional environmental and trade integration efforts

Belize is actively engaging in regional leadership roles focused on environmental management and economic integration within Central America. Under its Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), Belize hosted the 75th technical meeting in Belize City. The session included representatives from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, with Costa Rica participating virtually.

Key environmental priorities for Belize’s presidency include biodiversity, water resources, solid waste management, and the management of Sargassum. Officials highlighted the need for a regional project to address Sargassum through a circular economy approach to mitigate health and tourism impacts.

Simultaneously, a Belizean delegation participated in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ministerial dialogue in Panama City titled ‘Central America at the Center: Connectivity and Integration for a more Competitive Region’. The discussions focused on improving regional roads, border crossings, and customs modernization. The initiative aims to enhance the movement of goods and people across Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, leveraging Belize’s unique position as a member of both SICA and CARICOM.
