Portugal celebrates 116th anniversary of the Republic

Portugal is celebrating the 116th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic. President António José Seguro delivered his first official speech during the commemorations in Lisbon, where he called for political responsibility and warned against the erosion of trust in public institutions. He emphasized that democracy is not guaranteed and urged for stability and inter-party consensus, specifically praising the cooperation between the Government and the Socialist Party (PS) regarding the 2027 State Budget.

To mark the occasion, the President has opened the gardens of the Belém Palace and the Presidency Museum to the public for free access. Additionally, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, announced that the Parliament will now be open to the public every Saturday to increase civic engagement and transparency.

In his address, Seguro also touched upon social issues, including the cost of living, housing, and the importance of valuing teachers as essential pillars of the Republic. He advocated for a political culture that addresses the root causes of societal problems rather than just treating symptoms.
