Public events at Belém National Palace
Overview
The Palácio de Belém hosted several public cultural and civic events in late 2026.
In mid-September, the 9th Festa do Livro de Belém took place in the palace gardens. The book fair, featuring over 300 publishing brands, was opened by President António José Seguro, who emphasized that ‘a nation that reads is more cultured, free, and capable of making better choices.’
In early October, the palace gardens and the Presidency Museum were opened to the public to commemorate the 116th anniversary of the implementation of the Republic in Portugal. On October 4, President António José Seguro delivered his first Republic Day speech during commemorative ceremonies in Lisbon’s Praça do Município.
In his address, the President emphasized the need for political stability, courage, and a new political culture to address systemic issues. He warned against the erosion of trust in public institutions, citing administrative delays and judicial processes, and called for responsibility among public officials to ensure state integrity. Seguro also highlighted urgent socio-economic challenges, including low wages, housing costs, healthcare access, and the rising cost of living, advocating for policies that address root causes rather than symptoms. He further asserted that democracy is not guaranteed and urged for a strategic vision rather than technocracy. Additionally, the President issued a message for World Teachers' Day, stating that valuing teachers is essential to the strength of the Republic.
During the anniversary celebrations, the President also expressed support for the political consensus between the Government and the PS regarding the 2027 State Budget. To promote closer ties with the population, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, announced that Parliament would begin opening its doors to the public every Saturday starting at the end of the month.
