Beluga whale Peekachu dies at Chicago aquarium after Canadian rescue

Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga whale, has died at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The whale had been relocated from the shuttered Marineland park in Ontario, Canada, as part of an international rescue operation to prevent the euthanasia of the park's remaining marine mammals.

According to the Shedd Aquarium, Peekachu—who was blind in one eye and smaller than other whales—had shown early signs of progress and was interacting with staff. However, blood tests conducted on Tuesday indicated she was dehydrated. Despite efforts to provide medicine and fluids, she passed away suddenly that evening. A necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The relocation of whales from Marineland is part of a broader effort approved by the Canadian government to move approximately 30 beluga whales and four dolphins to accredited facilities in the United States and Spain, including the Georgia Aquarium and Oceanographic Valencia.
