Necropsies performed on Peekachu and Rain revealed ‘significant chronic inflammatory disease within their gastrointestinal systems,’ which experts suggest likely developed over an extended period prior to their arrival. Caspian, a 27-year-old beluga, also died after experiencing electrolyte abnormalities and acidic blood levels. At the Oceanogràfic in Spain, two animals have died: the beluga Jelly Bean and a 30-year-old bottlenose dolphin named Echo.
Most recently, a 9-year-old beluga named Cyprus died at SeaWorld San Diego. While facilities noted that animals were navigating significant transitions, animal welfare advocates have raised concerns regarding the risks of transporting animals with chronic medical needs. Organizations like World Animal Protection Canada have proposed alternatives such as the Whale Sanctuary Project in Nova Scotia.
