Beluga whales rescued from Marineland face rising mortality rates

The relocation of beluga whales rescued from the shuttered Marineland facility in Ontario, Canada, has faced significant setbacks. Six rescued whales have died since the transfers began: four at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, one at Oceanogràfic in Spain, and most recently, a 9-year-old whale named Cyprus at SeaWorld San Diego.

Animal welfare advocates have raised concerns regarding the health of the whales and the risks associated with transporting animals with chronic medical needs. While facilities like SeaWorld and the Shedd Aquarium noted that the whales were navigating significant transitions and that underlying conditions were only becoming clear through ongoing assessment, critics argue that animals lacking the health to endure such pressure should not have been moved.

To address the ongoing crisis, organizations such as World Animal Protection Canada have proposed alternatives to traditional aquarium care. These include converting Marineland into an end-of-life care center or accelerating the development of the Whale Sanctuary Project, a planned coastal refuge in Nova Scotia designed to provide a more natural environment for captive cetaceans.
