Benevento air miasma and river foam crisis provokes calls for transparent investigation
Residents of Benevento have reported foul odours (miasmi) that make the air virtually unbreathable in several districts. Simultaneously, a yellowish foam has covered the Calore River under the Vanvitelli bridge, accompanied by a massive die‑off of fish.
The provincial coordination of the Lega party has demanded immediate scientific analyses, systematic sampling, and full public disclosure of results to identify the source of both the air miasmas and the river foam. Civic group Civico 22 and WWF Sannio have also asked for an urgent meeting with ARPAC and the local health authority (ASL) to obtain data on air quality, water contamination and PM‑10 levels.
Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli (Alleanza Verde‑Sinistra) described the episode as an ecocide, condemned the absence of a functioning municipal wastewater‑treatment plant – a shortfall that has already resulted in EU fines – and announced he will raise the matter in Parliament.
