Benin President Romuald Wadagni Begins West Africa Tour and Names New Ministers

Newly inaugurated Benin President Romuald Wadagni, sworn in on 24 May 2026, concluded a multi‑country West African tour with a visit to Côte d'Ivoire on Thursday. The itinerary included stops in Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo and finally Abidjan, where he held a one‑hour meeting with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara. Discussions covered the role of ECOWAS, tensions with the Sahel Alliance, prospects for a West African common currency and plans for a future UEMOA summit. The president emphasized a “neighbourhood diplomacy” strategy.

Within two weeks of taking office, Wadagni reshaped his presidential staff by appointing twelve ministers‑advisers by decree on 5 June 2026. Notable appointments include Rachidi Gbadamassi as minister‑advisor for Defence and Security, Nicaise Kotchami Fagnon for Small and Medium Enterprises, and Ayibatin Jonas Hanta for Sports, Culture and Traditional Chiefs. Four women were among the advisers. These moves build on earlier appointments made in late May and will take effect upon publication in the official journal.
