Benjamin Kalu urges WTO to address food security and investment
Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has called on the World Trade Organization (WTO) to achieve concrete results regarding investment facilitation and public stockholding for food security. Speaking in Geneva during the 57th Session of the Steering Committee of the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO, Kalu warned that continued delays in these areas are undermining confidence in the multilateral trading system.
Kalu noted that while there has been progress on development issues and fisheries subsidies, the WTO’s credibility depends on its ability to serve developing nations. He specifically highlighted the lack of a permanent solution for public stockholding for food security, a commitment that has remained unfulfilled since the 2013 Bali Ministerial Conference. Nigeria is among the nations co-sponsoring demands for action on these issues.
