Nigeria engagement with the WTO
Overview
Nigerian officials have engaged in high-level discussions regarding the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the multilateral trading system.
On September 14, Vice President Kashim Shettima met with WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in New Delhi. Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism, stating that “sustainable prosperity cannot be achieved through isolation” and emphasizing the economic importance of global interconnectedness.
Following this, on September 18, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu addressed the WTO Parliamentary Conference in Geneva. Kalu urged the organization to deliver concrete results on investment facilitation and public stockholding for food security. He warned that delays in these areas, particularly the unfulfilled commitments regarding food security since the 2013 Bali Ministerial Conference, are “undermining confidence in the multilateral trading system.”
