Benjamin Netanyahu faces political pressure and new legislative proposals
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces mounting political and legal pressure. Opposition leader Avigdor Liberman has called for Netanyahu's resignation, holding him directly responsible for the failures of the October 7, 2023, attacks. Liberman further demanded that members of the current governing coalition be excluded from any future government.
In response to the documentary 'NAZA', which features IDF soldiers' testimonies regarding civilian deaths in Gaza, Netanyahu announced plans for two new bills. One would seek to revoke the citizenship of individuals who defame the Israel Defense Forces, while the second would increase defamation damages twentyfold. Culture Minister Miki Zohar has also requested that the Shin Bet investigate the film's sources.
On the international stage, Netanyahu is preparing to address the UN General Assembly in New York. This comes despite arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Gaza. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been denied a visa by the United States, preventing him from attending the assembly in person and forcing him to participate via video conference.
