Political and legal challenges facing Benjamin Netanyahu

Political pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has intensified amid scrutiny over national security failures and military conduct. Opposition lawmaker Gilad Kariv has called for Netanyahu’s removal, describing it as an ‘existential need’ for society due to the Prime Minister’s handling of investigations into the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Reports from Israeli media indicate that Netanyahu may have received warnings from the UAE President regarding a major operation by Yahya Sinwar prior to the October 7 attacks but allegedly failed to brief security chiefs. Further reports suggest the Israeli government rejected a Hamas offer for the immediate release of all civilian hostages following the attacks.

Regarding the conflict in Gaza, an IDF drone operator has alleged intentional firing on civilians. In response to international accusations of genocide, a coalition of over 5,000 figures, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, signed an open letter rejecting the term. The group argues that the legal standard of ‘specific intent’ required by the 1948 Genocide Convention has not been met and that the label has become a political accusation.
