Benjamin Netanyahu sues media outlets over October 7 warning reports
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has filed a defamation lawsuit against three media organizations and six journalists. The legal action follows reports alleging that Netanyahu was personally warned about the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, but failed to take necessary measures.
Reports from various outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and Haaretz, suggest two specific warnings were issued. One claim states that UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan warned Netanyahu in late September 2023 that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation. A second claim asserts that Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel personally warned the Prime Minister just days before the attack.
Netanyahu has consistently denied receiving any such warnings. He is seeking at least 2.6 million shekels in damages. The lawsuit targets Haaretz, Yedioth Ahronoth, the Ynet news portal, and Channel 12. Haaretz has refused to retract its reporting, stating its work is the result of extensive investigation and is prepared to defend its journalism in court.
