Israeli election race intensifies as parties submit lists

Overview

The snap election scheduled for 27 October 2026 is a tightly contested showdown between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud and the opposition. The election follows a July 17 Knesset vote to dissolve itself, driven by domestic opposition to judicial reforms and security challenges.

As of mid-September, 38 political parties have officially submitted candidate lists to the Central Elections Committee, creating a highly fragmented landscape. While the right-wing bloc faces potential vote splitting—notably with Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir running independently with Otzma Yehudit and former Brigadier General Ofer Winter submitting a separate list—the opposition remains a formidable challenger. Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party is emerging as a major contender, with recent Kanal 12 polling projecting it to lead with 25 seats, ahead of Likud’s 21.

Other notable contenders include Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid leading the B’Yachad list, as well as Benny Gantz and Avigdor Lieberman. The landscape is further complicated by new center-right entries like Sharren Haskel’s ‘Israel First’ party, which competes for the same Zionist-nationalist voter base. While parties outside the Netanyahu bloc collectively reach 68 seats, coalition formation remains difficult as most Jewish party leaders exclude cooperation with Arab lawmakers, who are expected to hold 11 seats.

Netanyahu continues to face intense legal and political pressure. He has initiated defamation proceedings against Haaretz and its authors, Shlomi Eldar and Ruth Yaval, following reports alleging that UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed warned him of a Hamas offensive prior to the October 7 attacks. Netanyahu has dismissed these claims as a “sinister plot” and a “malicious fabrication,” while Haaretz has defended its reporting as legitimate journalism.
