Bordeaux football club faces exclusion from all national competitions over missing €9 million guarantee

The French football authority DNCG has ruled that FC Girondins de Bordeaux will be excluded from every national competition for the 2026‑27 season because the club failed to provide the €9 million financial guarantee required to balance its budget. Bordeaux announced that it will appeal the decision, but if the sanction stands the team will be forced to compete in Regional 1, the sixth tier of French football, after already spending recent seasons in National 2.

Club owner Gérard Lopez is seeking financing to meet the guarantee, including a possible €10 million loan or direct injection, and is in talks with the British investment fund Sparta Capital, which is considering a takeover. An appeal hearing is scheduled within the next two weeks. The sanction follows a rapid decline that saw Bordeaux drop from Ligue 1 in 2022 to non‑professional status, with repeated financial mismanagement and the loss of major revenue streams since the pandemic.

If the appeal fails, the club’s demotion will represent a significant setback for one of France’s historically successful clubs, translating into reduced match‑day revenue, sponsorship challenges, and a further blow to the local football ecosystem.
