Bordeaux club ownership shifts as €10 M guarantee secured

Entities: CNOSF · Girondins de Bordeaux · Arnaud Saint‑André · Sparta Capital · Gérard Lopez

Overview

The DNCG appeal commission confirmed on 15 July 2026 that Girondins de Bordeaux were excluded from all national competitions and forced to restart in Régionale 1, the sixth tier, after failing to provide the €10 million financial guarantee required for the 2026‑27 season. Owner Gérard Lopez and Sparta Capital could not initially raise the funds, prompting a commercial‑court liquidation petition and an appeal to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). The club was given a deadline to demonstrate that €9‑10 million had been raised for the 2025‑26 and 2026‑27 seasons.

On 31 July 2026, López sold the club to London‑based investment fund Sparta Capital for a symbolic €1. Sparta Capital pledged roughly €10 million in guarantees, aiming to restore Bordeaux to the National 1 division, the only viable route for its survival. The agreement follows negotiations that included potential American partners and comes after Bordeaux’s management secured reduced stadium‑lease terms with Bordeaux Métropole as part of its financial plan.

If the CNOSF appeal succeeds, the French Football Federation could reinstate the club in National 1; otherwise liquidation remains a risk. Former player Christophe Dugarry continues to criticize the investors, warning that the club may still need to rebuild from the bottom of the pyramid.
