Benue State attacks kill up to 14, spark curfew and political fallout
Armed herders attacked the Efeyi community in the Ugboju district of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, killing at least 13‑14 people and injuring several others. Otukpo council chairman Maxwell Ogiri attributed the assault to Fulani militia and said police and security forces were deployed to investigate. In response, the Otukpo Local Government Council imposed a dusk‑to‑dawn curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. to prevent further violence.
Governor Samuel Ortom reported that he was targeted on his farm by roughly 15 gun‑armed men; he escaped by running more than a kilometre on foot and condemned the attackers as “herders”. The governor called for the arrest and prosecution of Miyetti Allah leaders, while political opponents, including Governor Hyacinth Alia and the PDP, traded blame over the killing of 15 residents in the same area.
Security personnel also engaged the assailants, killing two suspected attackers and recovering an AK‑47 and ammunition. Authorities continue to search for missing victims and reinforce police presence amid ongoing tension between herders and farming communities in Nigeria’s central belt.
