Benue State insecurity and ethnic violence

Overview

The wave of violence that began with attacks on 12‑13 July in Otukpo LGA has continued to intensify. Throughout late July, suspected Fulani herders carried out coordinated assaults across the Idoma‑speaking Benue South area, hitting villages such as Akpachi (Ugboju), Nobi, Ondo and Ankpechi. Official counts now put the death toll at nearly 60, with numerous injuries and looted food stores. The raids have forced thousands of residents to flee, creating a growing displacement crisis.

On 28 July, armed herders stormed the Efeyi community in the Ugboju district of Otukpo, killing at least 13‑14 people and injuring several others. The Otukpo council imposed a dusk‑to‑dawn curfew (7 p.m.‑6 a.m.) in response. Governor Samuel Ortom said he was targeted on his farm by about 15 gun‑armed men, escaped on foot, and condemned the attackers as “herders”. He called for the arrest and prosecution of Miyetti Allah leaders. Security forces killed two suspected attackers and recovered an AK‑47 and ammunition. Political opponents, including Governor Hyacinth Alia and the PDP, traded blame over the killings.

Affected communities continue to stage protests, demanding stronger protection. Governor Hyacinth Alia has maintained heightened patrols, inter‑state security cooperation and prosecutions, while local leaders urge forward bases and community guard units. Analysts suggest the attacks may be retaliation for the 26 June killing of Alhaji Ardo Risku Mohammed, chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association. As the confirmed death toll rises above 70, authorities face mounting pressure to curb the killings, address the displacement of thousands, and prevent further ethnic clashes in Benue State.
