Benue State residents report rights violations and aid diversion

Communities in Benue State, Nigeria, are reporting various human rights violations and security concerns. During a workshop organized by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), residents alleged attempts to silence communities regarding killings in rural areas and the imposition of high levies on farm produce.

Participants also raised concerns regarding the treatment of internally displaced persons (IDPs), noting that relief materials intended for displaced families are sometimes diverted, leaving beneficiaries with insufficient food.

In response to protection risks in displacement settings, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Benue State Government, and the World Health Organization (WHO) have collaborated to strengthen protection systems. Supported by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, this initiative focuses on preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. The program includes training civil society representatives and health workers to provide victim-centered, confidential, and respectful care to vulnerable groups in displacement camps.
