BEREC report: EU internet prices are low but speeds lag behind global leaders
A report by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) indicates that while European consumers benefit from some of the lowest broadband prices globally, the EU still lags behind international leaders in download speeds. The analysis compares the EU market to the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Despite progress in expanding fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) and 5G infrastructure, the regulator noted that the European telecommunications sector has not yet reached its full potential regarding network quality and the effective utilization of available infrastructure. BEREC also expressed skepticism regarding the assumption that market consolidation among operators automatically leads to increased investment and innovation.
