EU telecommunications technological gap
Overview
A report from the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) highlights a disparity in the European Union’s telecommunications sector. While the EU provides some of the most affordable broadband services globally, it faces a technological gap in network quality and download speeds compared to leaders such as the United States, China, Japan, and South Korea.
Data indicates that while fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) and 5G coverage have expanded, the depth of technology remains lower in Europe. For example, 5G Standalone infrastructure accounts for only 20.9% of mobile base stations in the EU, trailing behind the US and China. BEREC noted that lower investment levels in 5G could impact the support of advanced technologies like industrial AI and edge computing. Additionally, the regulator expressed skepticism that market consolidation among operators would inherently drive the necessary investment and innovation.
