Bergamo construction unions demand cooler work shifts amid heat wave

Construction unions in the province of Bergamo have warned that an upcoming “African‑type” heat wave threatens worker safety on construction sites and in quarries. The secretaries of FENEAL (UIL), FILCA (CISL) and FILLEA (CGIL) are urging stricter enforcement of the regional ordinance that bans open‑air construction between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on days when the Worklimate map indicates high risk.

The unions ask employers to organise tasks during the cooler morning hours, provide regular water supplies, shade areas and close monitoring for symptoms such as cramps, dizziness, headache or nausea. They also call on municipalities to amend local ordinances so that work can start earlier and reduce exposure to extreme temperatures.
