Bering Sea boat capsizes, leaving two dead and one teen survivor
A 15-year-old boy, Derek Parker, survived for several days in the frigid Bering Sea after his 18-foot skiff capsized. He was located by a US Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew on Monday afternoon, clinging to the overturned vessel approximately four miles east of Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island.
The boy’s older brother, who was captaining the boat, and a second crew member were recovered dead from the water. The group had departed from the village of Savoonga on Friday and was expected to return by Sunday morning.
Search efforts were delayed by poor weather and limited visibility, which prevented aircraft from reaching the area until Monday. Parker reportedly survived without food or water for several days following the accident.
