Bering Sea boat capsize and rescue

Overview

An 18-foot skiff departed from the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island and was reported overdue on Sunday night. The vessel capsized in the Bering Sea, resulting in the deaths of two crew members, including the boat’s captain.

Search and rescue operations were initially hindered by poor weather and limited visibility. On Monday afternoon, a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew located a 15-year-old survivor, Derek Parker, clinging to the overturned vessel approximately four miles east of the island.

The teenager, who reportedly survived for several days without food or water, was rescued by the vessel Northwest Explorer. Upon rescue, he exhibited symptoms of hypothermia and was treated with blankets and heat packs by the crew. The bodies of the two deceased crew members, identified as the survivor's brother and cousin, were recovered from the water and transported to Nome.
