Buenos Aires announces vehicle tax reductions for 2027

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires has announced a significant reduction in vehicle patent taxes (patentes) scheduled to take effect in 2027. According to Chief of Government Jorge Macri, the measure is part of the 2027 Budget project to be submitted to the Legislature.

The plan aims to provide tax relief to approximately 60% of the city's 1.63 million vehicles. Specifically, 50% of the fleet (roughly 824,000 vehicles) will see a reduction in tax rates, while 40% will maintain their current 2026 payment levels. Additionally, the age-based tax exemption will be expanded from vehicles 25 years or older to those 20 years or older, resulting in approximately 152,000 vehicles becoming entirely exempt from the tax.

Examples of the impact include a 2025 Renault Kwid potentially seeing its bimonthly bill drop from $134,300 to $72,000, and a 2023 Peugeot 208 decreasing from $136,500 to $87,800. Electric vehicles will remain exempt, while hybrid vehicles will maintain full exemption for the first two years before transitioning to progressive taxation.
