Berlin begins preparatory works for Schönhauser Allee bridge replacement

Preparatory works for the replacement of the Schönhauser Allee bridge in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district are set to begin in November 2026. The project involves replacing the 140-year-old structure, which sits above critical railway infrastructure including the S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations.

The initial phase focuses on relocating essential gas, water, and wastewater lines currently running through or alongside the existing bridge. Traffic safety installations are scheduled to start on 2 November, with utility relocation works expected to continue until March 2027. During this period, Dänenstraße will be closed to cars and cyclists to serve as a coordination site for the large-scale construction project, which is expected to continue through 2032.

While motor traffic, trams, buses, and cycling will remain possible in both directions on Schönhauser Allee, lanes will be narrowed or shifted, and a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour will be enforced in work zones. Pedestrian access will be maintained, though the northern entrance to the Schönhauser Allee U-Bahn station will be temporarily closed. Most public transport services, including the Ringbahn and BVG bus lines, are expected to remain operational throughout the early works.
