Berlin urban development and infrastructure projects

Berlin is managing several large scale infrastructure and urban development initiatives across different districts.

In the Mitte district, efforts are underway to preserve the historic Stettiner Tunnel as a monument, with the Berliner Unterwelten association working to restore its original portal. In the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf area, extensive construction in City West is expected to impact traffic and pedestrian access until 2031. Meanwhile, the planned expansion of the A100 city motorway faces political scrutiny following demands from an activist alliance regarding its 17th construction phase.

In Prenzlauer Berg, preparatory works for the replacement of the 140-year-old Schönhauser Allee bridge are scheduled to begin in November 2026. This project involves relocating gas, water, and wastewater lines, with utility relocation expected to continue until March 2027. While most public transport services will remain operational, the project will involve lane shifts, speed limits, and the temporary closure of the northern entrance to the Schönhauser Allee U-Bahn station. The full construction project is projected to continue through 2032.
