Berlin keeps Tempelhofer Feld open while reshaping Blankenburg South housing district

Tempelhofer Feld, a large public open space in Berlin, has been the focus of a proposed development to build more than 21,000 apartments. Civic groups and a recent public vote rejected the plan, arguing the field provides essential cooling, recreation and ecological benefits, and that the city already has sufficient land for new housing through other measures.

Meanwhile, the Berlin Senate adjusted the planning boundaries for the "Stadtquartier Blankenburger Süden" in the city’s northeast. The project will still deliver about 8,600 new apartments on roughly 156 hectares, with completion expected by 2045. The boundary change removes some parcels and adds small areas in Heinersdorf, but does not alter the overall housing target.
