In mid‑July, Berlin authorities faced strong civic resistance to a proposed 21,000‑unit build‑out on Tempelhofer Feld, a popular open space valued for its cooling, recreational and ecological functions. The city responded by keeping the field undeveloped while revising the nearby Blankenburg South project, trimming some parcels but maintaining a target of about 8,600 new apartments by 2045.

A week later, the Berlin Senate highlighted a broader acceleration plan. A study commissioned by the Berlin Sparkasse showed public preference for converting vacant office buildings into apartments, complemented by new construction on the city’s outskirts. The housing commission reported that 19,760 units had already been fast‑tracked and set an ambition to deliver up to 80,000 new homes by the end of 2026, supported by faster‑building legislation. Officials framed the office‑conversion approach as the most publicly backed route, even as they acknowledged higher costs and technical hurdles.
