Berlin launches BerlinPay pilot rewarding sustainable tourism on the Spree

Berlin has introduced BerlinPay, a pilot program running until 14 June that rewards tourists and residents for eco‑friendly actions near the city’s waterways, especially the Spree River. Participants who plant trees, cycle, pick up litter or use public transport can earn perks such as free canoe rides, cultural event tickets, discounted drinks and other experiences.

The launch took place on a solar‑powered boat on the Spree, with more than 40 partners signing up. VisitBerlin CEO Sabine Wendt said, “We are excited that over 40 collaborators have expressed great enthusiasm for the initiative.” Berlin’s senator for economy, energy and public enterprises Franziska Giffey added that the scheme shows how tourism can become a force for positive change. BerlinPay is modeled on Copenhagen’s CopenPay program, which began in 2024 and has already attracted interest from over 100 foreign destinations.

The pilot aims to demonstrate practical ways to make tourism in the German capital more sustainable while providing tangible benefits to both visitors and locals.
