Opponents, organised under the "NOlympia" initiative, warn that the projected €5 billion cost is unrealistic and would deepen the city’s fiscal strain, citing dilapidated sites like the Sportforum Hohenschönhausen and a lack of basic amenities such as public swimming pools in districts like Marzahn‑Hellersdorf.

Gabriele Hiller, spokesperson for "NOlympia" and former district parliamentarian, is collecting signatures for a potential Berlin-wide referendum, stressing that resources should instead support everyday sport programmes and school facilities. Olympian discus champion Christoph Harting has joined the campaign, warning that elite sport development must start with broad-based youth and community sport.
