Germany's Olympic and Tour de France bids
Entities: Tour de France · Berlin · Christian Prudhomme · Saxony · Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad‑Club (ADFC)
Overview
After the April 2026 referenda that stopped Hamburg’s Olympic bid, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) narrowed its focus to three candidates – Berlin, Munich or the Cologne‑Rhein‑Ruhr region. President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier now backs a national bid, and the DOSB will decide which city or region to put forward at a special meeting on 26 September in Baden‑Baden. In June 2026 the IOC adopted a reform that adds a pre‑selection review three months before a national candidate is chosen, requires a renewed vote of all IOC members on the final decision, and moves the award of the 2036 Summer Games to mid‑2029. A strategic dialogue will start in March 2027, followed by a targeted dialogue ending by the end of 2028, with the host selected at a mid‑2029 IOC session. A Brandenburg poll in June 2026 showed 51 % public support for a German bid for the 2036 Games, rising to 62 % among voters aged 16‑34. The DOSB is weighing a joint bid from Berlin, Munich and the Cologne‑Rhein‑Ruhr area for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 editions, with potential rivals such as Qatar and India’s Ahmedabad. Germany officially lodged its application to host the Grand Départ of the 2029 Tour de France on 5 July 2026. The proposal, championed by former defence minister Rudolf Scharping and the Grand Départ Allemagne group, would start in Berlin and run through Saxony, Saxony‑Anhalt and Thuringia, marking the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Funding talks with federal and state authorities are ongoing, and a decision is expected by year‑end. Competing bids come from Slovenia and Prague.
