Berlin Philharmonic performs at Carnegie Hall amid future relocation plans
The Berlin Philharmonic, led by chief conductor Kirill Petrenko, recently completed a series of four concerts at Carnegie Hall to launch the venue’s 2026-27 season. The performances featured works by Brahms, Elgar, and Tchaikovsky, with pianist Vikingur Ólafsson performing in place of the injured Daniil Trifonov.
Looking ahead, the orchestra is preparing for a major relocation. Due to planned renovations of the Philharmonie, the ensemble may be displaced from its home from 2032 to 2040. Petrenko noted that finding a temporary venue with the necessary acoustics is a “huge challenge.”
Plans are currently being formulated to establish a temporary facility in hangars at Tempelhof Airport. The estimated cost for the renovation and the construction of a makeshift hall is 1.15 billion euros, with the German federal government pledging 225 million euros toward the project. Following their New York residency, the orchestra is conducting its first South American tour in 25 years, with stops in Bogotá, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires.
