Berlin Philharmonic tours and Philharmonie renovation plans
Overview
The Berlin Philharmonic, led by chief conductor Kirill Petrenko, has undertaken several international tours. Following a series of charity concerts in Brazil to support the Association for Children and Adolescents with Cancer (TUCCA), the orchestra completed a four-concert residency at Carnegie Hall to launch the venue’s 2026-27 season. These performances featured works by Brahms, Elgar, and Tchaikovsky, with pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performing in place of the injured Daniil Trifonov.
The ensemble is currently conducting its first South American tour in 25 years. Recent stops include sold-out performances at the Julio Mario Santo Domingo theater in Bogotá, Colombia, and a return to Argentina’s Teatro Colón, marking the orchestra’s first appearance there in 26 years.
Amidst these tours, the ensemble faces long-term logistical planning due to scheduled renovations of the Philharmonie. These renovations, which may displace the orchestra from 2032 to 2040, involve an estimated cost of 1.15 billion euros. Petrenko has noted that finding a temporary venue with the necessary acoustics is a “huge challenge.” Current plans involve the potential construction of a temporary facility in hangars at Tempelhof Airport, supported by a 225 million euro pledge from the German federal government.
