Berlin Wall 65th Anniversary Commemorations in Germany

On 13 August 2026 the former inner‑German border site at Marienborn hosted a memorial event marking the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s construction. The programme featured speeches by Saxony‑Anhalt Deputy Premier Armin Willingmann and Lower Saxony Science Minister Falko Mohrs, a talk by writer Ines Geipel on the wall and the autumn of 1989, and a musical segment by the Ost‑West String Quartet. Former East‑German dissident and singer‑songwriter Stephan Krawczyk performed, and the historic Zoll area served as a backdrop for discussions with former border guards and refugees.

A related remembrance took place at the Brandenburg Gate, where witnesses recounted personal experiences of the wall’s early months, the construction of escape tunnels and the daring flights of more than 300 people through them. Former tunnel builder Joachim Neumann and diver‑turned‑fluchthelfer Hubert Hohlbein described their involvement in projects such as the famed “Tunnel 57,” which carried 57 escapees in October 1964. Together, the events highlighted how the wall shaped everyday lives, the struggle for freedom, and the ongoing work of memory and democracy education in Germany.
