Berlin Wall 65th anniversary commemorations

In August 2026 Germany marked the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s construction with a series of public remembrance activities. On 13 August, a memorial ceremony at the former inner‑German border site in Marienborn featured speeches by regional officials, a talk by writer Ines Geipel, musical performances, and testimonies from former border guards and escape‑tunnel builders. A parallel event at the Brandenburg Gate gathered witnesses who recounted personal experiences of the wall’s early months, escape tunnels and daring flights.

National broadcasters broadened the commemoration. ZDF aired a night‑long documentary marathon, beginning with "Deutschland ’61 – Countdown zum Mauerbau" and continuing with episodes of "Terra X History" and other series that examined life in the DDR, the role of border guards, political prisoners and families divided by the wall. ARD released the documentary "Wir Kinder der Mauer," focusing on the children who grew up under the wall and how the separation shaped their identities.

From 13 to 16 August, cultural institutions across Berlin hosted a programme of free events, including an open‑air exhibition titled “Mauerblicke. Berlin 1961‑1990” that displayed historic photographs of the wall’s construction and its impact on daily life. Guided tours, witness talks and artistic contributions accompanied the display, while other venues presented exhibitions on the wall’s victims and the broader history of division and democracy.

Former FDP deputy Linda Teuteberg warned that the AfD exploits a "resentment policy" by keeping the East‑West divide alive, arguing that the notion of an "Ost identity" was invented after reunification and linking the narrative to upcoming state elections in Saxony‑Anhalt, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern and Berlin. Together, the on‑site events, political commentary and extensive documentary programming highlighted both the historical legacy of the Berlin Wall and its continuing relevance for German memory, education and contemporary politics.
