Bern and German governments approve significant new budget drafts

In Bern, Switzerland, the city parliament has approved a 2027 budget with a deficit of approximately 8.9 million Swiss francs. This figure is more than triple the 2.5 million franc deficit originally proposed by the city council. The approved budget includes 2 million francs for cost-of-living adjustments for city staff, 1 million francs for infrastructure maintenance, and additional funds for climate adaptation, tree care, daycare, and social services. The final decision will be put to a public vote in Bern at the end of November.

In Germany, the federal cabinet has approved a record-breaking draft for the upcoming one-year national budget, totaling approximately 72 billion euros. This represents an increase of 2.2 billion euros compared to medium-term financial planning. The plan allocates 1.2 billion euros to municipalities, including 504 million euros in loans via the municipal cyclical component. Specific allocations include 200 million euros for energy modernization, 140 million euros for clinics, and funds for education and security, such as creating 650 police positions and 3,400 school-related positions.
