Berrocal seeks catastrophic zone status after devastating wildfire
The Mayor of Berrocal, Ángel Luis Romero, has announced that the municipal council will hold an extraordinary plenary session this coming Monday. During this meeting, all seven members of the local government intend to unanimously request a declaration of a “catastrophic zone” (zona catastrófica) following the devastating wildfire that began on August 6.
The fire, which originated in the Raboconejo area of Niebla, burned approximately 33,000 hectares and severely impacted Berrocal. While residents have been able to return to the town center, Mayor Romero emphasized that the community faces significant cultural, social, and economic challenges. He has called for immediate financial assistance and concrete rescue plans from the Junta de Andalucía and the central government to address the long-term consequences of the disaster.
