Niebla wildfire impact in Berrocal

Overview

The Niebla wildfire has caused extensive destruction in the municipality of Berrocal, scorching nearly the entire municipal territory and burning approximately 33,000 hectares. The fire, which originated in the Raboconejo area, left the landscape unrecognizable, characterized by ash-covered riverbanks and significant losses in livestock and rural economic activities such as beekeeping.

Mayor Ángel Luis Romero described the aftermath as an “apocalypse,” noting that while the town center was saved, the surrounding environment and local economy face severe long-term damage. In response to the disaster, the municipal council has planned an extraordinary plenary session to unanimously request a declaration of a “catastrophic zone” (zona catastrófica). The local government is calling for immediate financial assistance and rescue plans from the Junta de Andalucía and the central government to address the social, cultural, and economic challenges facing the community.
