Bethesda developers hit by Microsoft Xbox layoffs
Bethesda Game Studios was among the developers impacted by a major Microsoft restructuring in July 2026. Microsoft announced it would eliminate approximately 3,200 positions across its gaming division, with roughly 1,600 roles being cut immediately. These layoffs affected teams within both Bethesda and ZeniMax.
Former employee Anne Barrett described the layoffs as devastating, noting that many developers believed working on major franchises like 'The Elder Scrolls' and 'Fallout' would provide job security. Barrett reported that employees were notified via brief Microsoft Teams meetings, often lasting less than three minutes, where cameras and microphones were disabled, preventing staff from reacting or asking questions.
Following the meetings, employees were quickly stripped of access to internal communication tools like Slack. The cuts have raised concerns regarding the loss of institutional knowledge at studios currently developing high-profile titles.
