Overview

Microsoft’s restructuring of its Xbox division has progressed, with the company reporting it is approximately three-quarters through a workforce reduction plan that has resulted in nearly 2,000 job cuts since July. Recent actions include the layoff of 268 employees across Halo Studios, central management, and other first-party studios.

The reorganization has fundamentally altered franchise management. Activision will now lead the development of the next mainline Halo title via a new, independent team, while Halo Studios transitions to a support role. Additionally, Activision has expanded its oversight to include Rare and World’s Edge, and King will absorb Microsoft Casual Games. In other moves, Playground Games and Turn 10 will merge into a single studio focused on the Forza and Fable franchises, while Undead Labs has become an independent entity. Double Fine and Compulsion Games have also transitioned toward independence.

Following the decision to move Obsidian Entertainment under the Bethesda remit, Bethesda head Jill Braff issued an internal memo to address staff concerns. Braff emphasized that Obsidian will remain ‘distinct’ and that its roadmap will not be reset, specifically countering fears that the studio would be relegated to a support role for the Fallout franchise. Bethesda confirmed it will continue to lead the Fallout franchise, while Obsidian remains responsible for its own upcoming Fallout project. Other confirmed projects include The Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 5, and remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Meanwhile, Ninja Theory faces potential closure after two sale agreements collapsed, and Arkane remains under consultation.
