Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland open Knowles-Rowland House in Houston
Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Tina Knowles celebrated the grand opening of the Knowles-Rowland House in Houston, Texas, on October 13. The $8.4 million redevelopment project transforms the former Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth into 31 permanent supportive housing units designed for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
Developed through a partnership between the nonprofit Bread of Life, Inc., Temenos Community Development Corporation, and St. John’s Downtown Church, the facility provides more than just shelter. Residents have access to essential services, including mental health counseling, substance use treatment, case management, life-skills training, and nutrition assistance. Of the 31 apartments, 16 are specifically designed to accommodate residents with mobility or sensory impairments.
The site has deep historical ties to the singers; the original youth center was established in 1999 using proceeds from Destiny’s Child’s first single. The building previously suffered damage from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and a fire in 2021 before being repurposed for this housing initiative. The opening ceremony included Beyoncé’s daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter.
