Bezalel Smotrich calls for Gaza annihilation and Israeli sovereignty

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called for the annihilation of the Gaza Strip as a terrorist entity, describing its population of 1.8 million people as 'Nazis.' During recent public appearances, Smotrich stated that while he does not advocate for genocide, the enclave 'should not exist' and should instead come under permanent Israeli sovereignty for Zionist and security reasons.

Smotrich has also demanded that Israel apply permanent sovereignty over territories in Lebanon. His rhetoric follows previous controversial statements regarding the Palestinian town of Huwara in the West Bank.

In addition to his comments on Gaza, Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have advocated for the expansion of Israeli settlements. Ben-Gvir has previously proposed a 'voluntary migration' plan to relocate most Gaza residents abroad over a seven-year period. Smotrich, who oversees civilian affairs in the occupied territories, recently announced over $400 million for 34 new settlements in the West Bank.
