Bezmer mayor reassured after defence minister discusses US aircraft deployment

Mayor Roshen Rusev of the village Bezmer said he feels "a bit more reassured" after a meeting with Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov. The minister told local officials that the highest security measures have been taken regarding the deployment of American aircraft at the Bezmer air base.

Rusev said he will pass the minister’s comments to the villagers. He also handed over a petition signed by 3,249 residents from 26 nearby villages that opposes the aircraft’s placement. A protest was scheduled for the evening, and the mayor noted that other mayors in the Yambol region expressed disagreement with the deployment.

Minister Stoyanov thanked the petition and affirmed the decision was difficult but appropriate for the current situation.
