Iran warns Bulgaria over US tanker deployment
Entities: Dimitar Stoyanov · Rumen Radev · United States · Bezmer Air Base · Besmer Air Base
Overview
Iran’s foreign ministry issued a third warning on 27 July, condemning Bulgaria’s decision to host up to eight U.S. KC‑135 aerial‑refueling aircraft at the Bezmer military air base. The warning reiterated that Bulgarian officials bear responsibility for a “dangerous decision” that supports U.S. operations against Tehran.
Earlier that week the Bulgarian parliament approved moving the U.S. aircraft to Bezmer, prompting local protests over fears the base could become a target. Prime Minister Rumen Radev responded by convening a security working meeting with interior, defence, transport and intelligence officials. The ministers reported no direct threat but pledged tighter security around Bezmer, national airspace and other critical infrastructure, and pledged ongoing coordination with NATO and regional partners.
Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the risk of an Iranian missile strike remains limited and lower than when the planes were based at a civilian airport. Iran also warned of possible “sleeper cells” being activated in response to the deployment, which is authorised from 24 July to 1 October 2026.
