BfV warns of rising transnational repression by China, Iran, and Russia

The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has issued a warning regarding the rise of transnational repression. In a new brochure, the domestic intelligence agency highlights how authoritarian states target, intimidate, and monitor critics and dissidents even after they have fled to democratic nations.

The BfV identifies China, Iran, and the Russian Federation as key actors in these activities. The agency notes that such actions are not merely threats to individuals but also constitute an attack on national sovereignty and the free democratic basic order. The goal of these tactics is to pressure individuals into political withdrawal and silence criticism of their home governments.

This assessment aligns with research from Freedom House, which identifies the Chinese Communist regime as a primary international actor in transnational repression. The phenomenon is increasingly viewed as a systematic tool used by various states to ensure that those seeking refuge abroad do not feel secure.
