BGDA strengthens oversight of Guinean musical disputes

The Bureau guinéen du droit d’auteur (BGDA) has announced measures to tighten oversight within Guinea’s cultural sector. This decision follows an increase in verbal clashes, insults, and invectives shared through songs, social media, and public performances.

BGDA Director General Moussa Fofana stated that while artistic rivalry is a healthy part of the nation’s musical history, it must not devolve into defamation, humiliation, or the degradation of culture. Fofana emphasized that previous generations competed through talent and songwriting rather than outrage.

The institution intends to expand its role in handling complaints regarding violations of moral rights, personal attacks, and breaches of the penal code. The BGDA will also implement new control and sanction tools to protect the patrimonial and moral rights of creators.
